Planning International Workshop on Integrated Responses to Climate Change

Can we tackle the threat of climate change we are facing? Is it true that a safety zone in the climate system is pushed over by anthropogenic CO2 emissions, which brings about catastrophes? If then, are we capable enough to put it back? This first integrated climate change workshop to be held by GERC in October will be a small step forward for us, identifying where we are and what we can do in terms of the climate issue. Now, GERC intends to hold a workshop, inviting selected experts in the fields of prediction, impacts and responses to climate change, with a view to seeking scientific and integrated solutions to combat climate change.

Invited Speakers

Dr. Stephen E. Schwartz
Dr. Stephen Schwartz is a senior scientist at Brookhaven National Laboratory. He developed methods to describe the rate of reactions in clouds that lead to production of acid rain, and has been focusing on microscopic and submicroscopic aerosol particles, which influence a variety of atmospheric processes, from precipitation to climate change. He has also served as chief scientist in the Atmospheric Science Program of U.S. Department of Energy since 2004.Dr. Schwartz received his bachelor's degree in chemistry from Harvard University in 1963, and Ph.D. in chemistry from the Univeristy of California, Berkely in 1968. After postdoctoral research at the University of Cambridge, England, Schwartz joined the Chemistry Department at Stony Brook University. He joined Brookhaven National Laboratory in 1975.Dr. Schwartz's current research interest centers on the influence of energy related emissions on climate, with a focus on the role of atmospheric aerosols. Schwartz is author or coauthor of over a hundred papers published in peer-reviewed scientific journals, and serve on numerous national and international panels. He is one of some 300 scientists worldwide to be designated a "highly cited researcher" in geophysics by Thomson-ISI (formerly the Institute for Scientific Information)

● Prof. Byun Dae-Won

Daewon Byun is a professor in Atmospheric Science in the Department of Geosciences, University of Houston, U.S. Dr Byun is jointly appointed as a professor of Chemistry. He leads UH Air Quality Modeling Group, a multidisciplinary institute in the School of Natural Sciences and Mathematics.Dr. Byun received his B.Sc. in Meteorology in 1977 from the Seoul National University, Korea, and obtained an M.S. degree in Atmospheric Sciences in 1983 and a Ph.D. in Atmospheric Sciences in 1987, both from North Carolina State University, Raleigh, North Carolina.Dr. Byun has worked as a research atmospheric scientist in various capacities. He worked for Environmental Research & Technology (Currently, ENSR) in 1987 as meteorological modeler, Computer Sciences Corporation as Senior Scientific Specialist from 1988 to 1992, and Environmental Protecion Agency, on assignment from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration from 1992 to 2001. In 2001, he moved to the University of Houston to establish and direct the UH Air Quality Modeling Group. During his professional career, Dr. Byun has contributed to air quality modeling community in many ways.Currently, he serves in the Science Board for the NCAR/Air Force Weather Research and Forecasting (WRF) project and Executive Committee of the Texas Natural Resources and Conservation Commission's Science Review Committee for Air Quality Study.

● Dr. Kiyoshi Takahashi

Kiyoshi Takahashi has served as a senior researcher in Climate Risk Assessment Research Section, Center for Global Environmental Research at National Institute for Environmental Studies in Japan since July 1996.Dr. Takahashi received his bachelor of Engineering in 1995, and completed his PH.D. in Engineering in 2003 both from Kyoto University. He has served as one of the lead authors and contributing authors in IPCC-AR4-WG2, as well as had several publications including "Impacts of global warming on agricultural production and adaptations in response (2006)", "Integrated assessment of greenhouse gas stabilization concentrations, emission pathways and impact threshold values for control of global warming (2006)", and Climate policy assessment using the Asia-Pacific (2007).His research interests focus on impact assessment with considering uncertainties in climate projection.

● Dr. Taka Hiraishi
Dr. Taka Hiraishi is a co-chair of IPCC Task Force on National Greenhouse Gas Inventories, and a special advisor to the Environment Minister in Japan on OECD sustainable development activities, and senior consultant. He is also a member of the Board of Directors and Senior Consultant of Institute for Global Environmental Strategies (IGES). Taka Hiraishi obtained B,Sc (1996) and M.Sc. (1968) in Industrial Chemistry from Tokyo University. He joined Ministry of Labour (Occupational Health and Safety Department) in April 1968, and moved to the newly-established Environment Agency in 1971, working in the fields of offensive odour, acid rain, ozone layer, hazardous wastes, hazardous chemicals and water pollution, till 1996. He also worked for UNEP in 1989 – 98. He is lecturing at Osaka University, Sophia Universiy, and Gakushuin University.
